In building and keeping up this site I have used and still use a number of development tools, application and other software.
Here is a list of the main ones, for those that may be interested:
Drupal
Drupal 6.8 with a total of 102 core and contributed modules.
I have always liked the tag cloud. It is a powerful way of allowing a user to access relevant content.
It is called a cloud because it shows the site content in the way a menu does, but in a seemingly jumbled way, that shows more information by giving a way to highlight the strength, depth or density of your content. This is ideal for a mixed content site that is a characteristic of many small sites.
Today I switched this site from plain old Drupal to Acquia Drupal. It was an extremely smooth switch over for which I first practised on a test site. The result was that this site wasn't out of action for maintenance for more than two minutes, the time it takes to rename two directories. It took me overall less than and hour and a half, to make all the changes behind the scene.
Recently I have been getting very annoyed whilst browsing the net by some pop-ups that are identified by double underlined words in hat seem normal text. As soon as the mouse gets near them they enable a pop-up. The ads are in a block that describes them as been the nefarious work of a company called "Vibrant advertising". They are particularly annoying as when I use my mouse to move down the page and then go back to the tool bar, to the go back button, or go to the search tool bar it is easy to move the cursor over one of these little blighters.
I thought of just enabling the selective add block and that would be it. Alas it was not that simple.
No, ZuNOB has nothing whatsoever to do with Zune (Microsoft). In fact ZuNOBers are considering suing Microsoft for the appropriation of a massive cultural heritage for commercial purposes.
To make it very clear: ZuNOB has not failed at the end of 2008. There is nothing wrong with ZuNOB software, or non-existent firmware and hardware. Their very non-existence guarantees that ZuNOB will continue working and not fail, unlike Zune.
We will not be forced to re-reimburse all those many non-paying users of ZuNOB.
I have Ubuntu 8.10 (Ibex Intrepid) installed on my PC as, finally, a move from Windows to Linux.
I have had a few problems, no show-stoppers that didn't, or couldn't, get solved. I still have a few issues, some that won't get solved any time soon, I am sure, and some that I will solve as I find them.
I have had a few difficulties with SWF objects in particular, videos especially, that didn't work, or render properly in Ubuntu. I think I have resolved this problem now, by disabling the GNash package and switching to SWFdec instead.
